About

Audrey Code was born in a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Italian and Irish second generation parents. Audrey was copying comics at age 6 and went to art school at age 10, taking Saturday classes at the Carnegie Museum. Memories of the blast furnaces’ flaming reflections in the river at night made a huge impression on her.

Later in her formative years, Code studied with Balcomb Greene and Samuel Rosenburg at Carnegie Mellon University while gaining her BFA in Painting. She went on to study painting with Leo Manso and Victor Candel at a Provincetown workshop in 1961. There she met many artists including Alan Kleiman, who later became her husband in 1963. The following year, Code moved to New York City to be with Kleiman and further her artistic career.

During the 70’s and 80’s, much of her work was influenced by natural phenomena (Carl Sagan’s Nova Programs on PBS specifically) as well as paintings from the Renaissance era.

Some notable accomplishments include the following…. In 1981 Audrey was awarded the CAPS award by the New York Council of the Arts. In the 1990’s, Code appeared on PBS with Neil Grayson discussing her work featured at the Dactyl Foundation in Soho, NYC.

Recent exhibits of Code’s include Women: Diverse Interludes at Andre Zarre Gallery in Chelsea in August 2009 and Grand Gestures at the Broome Street Gallery in October 2009.
